The medical name for a collapsed lung is "pneumothorax." When air gets into the area around the lungs, it's called a pneumothorax (the pleural space). When you have an open injury to your chest wall or a tear or break in your lung tissue, air can get into the pleural space, destroying the pressure that keeps your lungs inflated.

Lung disease, injury from a sport or accident, assisted breathing with a ventilator, or even changes in air pressure experienced while scuba diving or mountain climbing are all possible causes of ruptured or injured chest or lung walls. The cause of a pneumothorax is often unclear.

A breach in your chest or lung wall will cause the lung to collapse, putting pressure on the heart.
