A pneumothorax is a lung that has collapsed. When air enters into the gap between your lung and chest wall, it's called a pneumothorax. Air presses against the outside of the lung, causing it to collapse. Pneumothorax can be characterized as a complete lung collapse or a partial lung collapse.

A blunt or penetrating chest injury, some surgical procedures, or damage from underlying lung disease may all result in a pneumothorax. It could also happen for no apparent cause. Sudden chest pain and shortness of breath are common symptoms. A collapsed lung can be fatal in certain situations.

To extract the excess air from a pneumothorax, a needle or chest tube is normally placed between the ribs. A small pneumothorax, on the other hand, can heal on its own.
